Significance
Incoming Prime Minister Robert Fico’s gradual adoption of nationalism, aversion to migration and conspiracy theories have jeopardised Slovakia’s reputation as a reliable partner internationally. Although two of the three government parties have ‘social democracy’ in their names, the Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament (EP) recently suspended their membership.
Impacts
Military aid for Ukraine will be cut and Fico has a long track record of opposing sanctions on Russia.
The Slovak government’s influence in the EU will be reduced because it now lacks membership in a major EP party group.
The previous government’s anti-corruption fight will be reversed and changes in the police and legal system may cause disquiet in the EU.
