Significance
This sector has grown substantially with the rise in recent years of the world gold price, contributing to the rapid deforestation of the rainforest in the north of the country. Informal mining employs large numbers, providing important electoral support for the ruling Movement towards Socialism (MAS). Informal miners elsewhere in Latin America are also seeking greater scope in which to work legally.
Impacts
Gold prices look set to remain high over the short term.
Miners will use their political leverage to protect their interests.
Wildfires will exacerbate the destruction of Bolivia’s forests.
