Significance
On November 30 the same trio plus Australia announced coordinated sanctions, in response to Pyongyang’s launch on November 21 of a military reconnaissance satellite. For the first time, those sanctioned include a cyber entity: ‘Kimsuky’, which the US Treasury Department called “a cyberespionage unit with strategic significance”.
Impacts
North Korea will use multiple methods, including phishing, attacks on supply chains, exploiting software flaws and fraudulent contracts.
North Korea’s cybertheft will intensify due to the difficulties in tracking and attribution.
Cryptocurrency firms will be a prime target for North Korean hackers.
