Significance
The report contains the results of opium poppy cultivation surveys in Myanmar and Laos during the 2022/23 poppy season. The ‘Golden Triangle’ -- centred on the Myanmar-Laos-Thailand tripoint -- has long been a hub for producing illicit drugs.
Impacts
Myanmar’s ethnic armed organisations will continue to rely heavily on opium sales to fund their operations.
Traffickers will increasingly use waterways for smuggling to avoid tighter patrols by various authorities on land.
Drug addiction will remain a major contributory factor to crime across deprived parts of mainland South-east Asia.
