Significance
Belgium’s priorities include: agreeing a Single Market Emergency Instrument (SMEI), to equip the EU to deal with future crises such as a new pandemic; establishing a stable framework for Ukraine’s accession to the EU; and overseeing the final approval of migration reforms.
Impacts
Hungary, which will take over from Belgium in July, will likely use its presidency to frustrate Ukraine’s accession talks.
Immigration reforms will not prevent tensions between member states during periods of heightened migration pressure.
Victory for Vlaams Belang in June’s elections would likely see the party attempt to start negotiations for the independence of Flanders.
