Significance
The changes respond to pressures to facilitate the development of agriculture in the region. The pace of deforestation has been rapid in recent years to the detriment of indigenous peoples living there. The region has also seen increased illegal activities, including illicit mining and forestry as well as the ever-expanding frontier of coca cultivation.
Impacts
Violent confrontations are likely to persist between indigenous organisations and migrants to the Amazon.
Peru will face criticism from US authorities as the axis of drug manufacture and trafficking shifts towards the Amazon.
The weakening of environmental controls will also impact on illegal mining in the region.
