Significance
The government made significant concessions to smallholding farmers on January 26, but representatives of large arable farmers are not satisfied. President Emmanuel Macron is expected to raise farmers’ concerns with EU leaders at a summit on February 1.
Impacts
The protests will test the new prime minister and his credentials to succeed Macron.
Concessions to farmers could trigger anti-government demonstrations by pro-environmental groups.
The EU environmental agenda will face greater pushback in the next European Parliament if the right perform strongly, as is expected.
