Significance
Fidesz has suffered three high-profile political casualties following the presidential pardon for Endre Konya, who tried to cover up for a child abuser: President Katalin Novak has stepped down, former Justice Minister Judit Varga has left public life and Bishop Zoltan Balog has tendered his resignation as head of Hungary’s Reformed Church.
Impacts
The 13th constitutional amendment in as many years will remove presidential pardons for crimes involving children.
Novak’s fall is prompting the political opposition to demand direct rather than parliamentary election of the president.
The scandal will encourage the independent media in exposing politically sensitive issues and toppling senior government figures.
