Significance
According to the constitution, the presidential contest must take place in September-October, but parliamentary elections are not due until 2025. President Ranil Wickremesinghe will probably seek another term, although he has yet to confirm this.
Impacts
Sri Lanka’s partners will try to strengthen links with all key political players, preparing for a possible change of leadership.
Parties wary of the JVP may look to rally behind Wickremesinghe as a common candidate.
This presidential election may prove to be the first to have as many as three genuine contenders.
