Significance

The road-and-rail project, which could end up costing around USD30bn, would link deep-water ports on either side of the Kra Isthmus, in effect connecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. It is strongly championed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin but remains controversial, not least because of the anticipated expense.

Impacts

Shipping companies will likely refrain from endorsing the project.

The scheme is unlikely to become entangled in US-Chinese regional competition.

Residents in areas affected by construction plans will stage protests.
