Significance
The elections are likely to be organised in November. The MpD currently holds 14 of 22 municipalities. The elections will take place at a moment when the government is set to take key economic policy decisions, including the privatisation of state assets, that could prove unpopular.
Impacts
Cape Verde’s overreliance on tourism makes it particularly vulnerable to global economic shocks.
The MpD may struggle to retain power in the 2026 general elections.
The government’s 2026 poverty reduction targets appear increasingly elusive.
