Significance
Glas has been convicted of corruption and was subject to a preventive arrest warrant when he sought political asylum at the embassy in December. The raid has been condemned by foreign governments, particularly that of Mexico, which has severed diplomatic ties. An informal alliance between Noboa’s government and the correista opposition is over.
Impacts
The invasion of the Mexican embassy and breaking of diplomatic conventions will alarm investors.
International reaction to the incident could hit efforts to promote tourism, a sector Noboa has prioritised for development.
Ecuador’s relations with Mexico will remain tense for the rest of Noboa’s presidency.
