Significance
A major milestone was showcased in February, as KAAN, the country’s first domestically produced fifth-generation combat aircraft, made its maiden flight. The aircraft is equipped with locally made smart munitions, but its engines are powered by General Electric. Those will eventually be replaced by domestically manufactured power units.
Impacts
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will leverage the defence industry to strengthen its support among the ultra-nationalists.
A weak economy could drive outward migration, limiting the availability of skillsets needed to grow the defence industry.
Deepening rapprochement between Turkey and the Gulf states will support increases in defence exports.
