Significance
This was followed by April 29 legislative and regional elections which saw the ruling Union for the Republic (UNIR) party win an overwhelming majority of seats in the parliament and regional councils. The new constitution will turn Togo from a presidential system to a parliamentary one.
Impacts
The lack of institutional outlets for opposition voices will increase the coup risk if there is a major social or political crisis.
The jihadist threat in northern Togo may have limited growth prospects in the coming year.
Faure’s method of avoiding contentious presidential elections may set a regional precedent if it proves successful.
