Significance
The ratcheting up of minimum levels of SAF consumption over the next decade imply a huge increase in demand but cost and supply capacity constraints present a serious challenge. Hydrogen propulsion and battery technology are alternative pathways to decarbonise aviation but SAF is the current leading option.
Impacts
Growing SAF production will increase the supply of other byproduct renewable fuels such as renewable diesel and bionaphtha.
Processes in development such as converting alcohol to jet fuel blend face more competition than others from uses such as food production.
SAF will create a new stream of investment for the wider bioeconomy.
