Significance
Egypt, Israel, the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Western states have separate interests concerning Rafah that are not easy to align. The main obstacle is Israel's refusal to allow the PA to operate the Palestinian side of the crossing.
Impacts
Right-wing ministers in the Israeli government will take more measures to weaken the PA's authority in the West Bank.
Israeli opposition to a Palestinian state will slow momentum towards a US-Saudi security pact.
International criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza will grow further but is unlikely to change its war conduct.
