Significance
Shortly after her departure, Chief of Army Staff Waker-uz-Zaman said an interim government would be formed. President Mohammed Shahabuddin yesterday dissolved parliament. His press secretary subsequently announced that economist Muhammad Yunus would lead the interim administration, in keeping with the demands of student leaders who played key roles in the protests.
Impacts
India will try to build rapport with the political actors whom it in effect ignored during Hasina’s rule.
Pressure will grow domestically and from the international community for free and fair elections.
Numerous arrests are likely as the authorities seek to punish state and non-state actors responsible for violence against protesters.
