Significance
Incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe seeks another term, this time as an independent rather than a representative of his United National Party (UNP). A recent survey on voting intentions suggests that he trails his main challengers: Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) chief Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Impacts
Whoever wins will struggle to fulfil at least some of his campaign promises.
The next parliamentary elections will also be hard-fought.
Keeping the IMF bailout on track will be key to sustaining economic recovery.
