Significance
The announcement is the latest sign that Azerbaijan’s role in the Eurasian gas market has grown stronger since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Impacts
Gazprom will seek to increase its presence in Central Asian gas markets.
Increased Russian sales of gas to Azerbaijan and Central Asia will replace only a small fraction of the lost market in Europe.
Russia will increase trade flows though the South Caucasus to avoid Western sanctions.
