Significance
Despite the substantial powers of the presidency, neither man is likely to drive major improvements or indeed a significant deterioration in Malawi’s strong democracy or weak economy.
Impacts
If Lotus Resources reopens the Kayelekera uranium mine as promised, uranium would quickly become Malawi’s second-largest export again.
The Kayelekera mine and a USD350mn US support package offer Malawi’s best prospects for an economic boost over the short term.
Both Mutharika and Chakwera are likely to maintain a similarly balanced foreign policy towards both the United States and China.
