Significance
President Daniel Noboa won the second round of snap presidential elections in October 2023 -- called when former President Guillermo Lasso dissolved parliament to avoid impeachment -- taking on what would have been the remainder of Lasso’s term. Legislative elections also take place in February, through which Noboa will look to boost his power.
Impacts
The elections will increase investor uncertainty as a Gonzalez win would end Noboa’s liberal economic agenda.
The political climate will become even more volatile as elections near.
Criminal cartels will use the elections to demonstrate their power, exacerbating political violence risks.
