Significance

President William Ruto has not openly supported the motion, but it would not have happened without his blessing. The motion sailed through parliament, but Kenyans are clearly divided on the issue, which marks another crisis for the government following a summer of protests, scandals and political realignments.

Impacts

Gachagua’s removal will stir sympathies among those who see this as a political witch-hunt and a betrayal by Ruto.

The current front-runner to replace Gachagua as deputy president is Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki.

Although Kindiki is uncontroversial and well placed to liaise with investors and donors, he lacks a strong political support base.
