Significance
The report particularly cited press freedom, stating that it was currently under threat. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly criticised the report, labelling it as “fake news”. The report coincides with other rule-of-law concerns in relation to Italy, such as those concerning judicial independence and corruption.
Impacts
Although the recommendations are not binding, the report’s findings can inflict reputational damage on countries.
More than two years after the general election, there is no sign that support for the ruling coalition is dwindling.
The Commission will continue to be hesitant to impose tough rule-of-law sanctions against countries.
