Significance
Mech Dara is an award-winning reporter renowned for his coverage of human trafficking and online scams in Cambodia. Less than three weeks before his arrest, the United States announced sanctions on businessman and ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) politician Ly Yong Phat for alleged human rights abuses linked to the online scam industry.
