Significance
The launch of Albania’s substantive EU membership talks came on the back of strong support from Italy, Tirana’s key EU partner, following the opening of Italian-run asylum-seeker processing centres in Albania.
Impacts
Progress in the accession talks would attract increased EU assistance and investment, benefiting Albania’s growth.
The opening of the talks will boost Rama’s re-election chances in 2025.
Albania is unlikely to replicate the deal with Italy with other states.
