Significance
It attracted over 200 exhibitors and resulted in the signing of 133 sales agreements totalling over USD6.2bn, 70% of which was for export of Turkish products. However, the sector's growth -- reflecting a determination to be more self-sufficient, and underpinned by state support -- is placing an untenable strain on government finances.
Impacts
If Ankara continues its non-compliance with Western demands on the S-400 system, the current unofficial embargoes could be formalised.
Exports of defence equipment to partner states that NATO considers to be against the alliance's interests could further alienate Turkey.
Ankara will continue to target military cooperation with countries in the Middle East for political, military and broader economic reasons.
