Significance
The news left the Serbian public reeling in shock and anger. Many assumed that the tragedy was a direct consequence of corruption in awarding public procurements. “Corruption kills” has since become a slogan of public protests.
Impacts
The current protests are unlikely to threaten or seriously destabilise the SNS’s rule in the short term.
Opposition parties are too weak and unpopular to mobilise larger protests.
Support for the SNS, which prided itself on the delivery of public investments, will take a blow.
