Significance
Despite the expansion, hurdles to recycling remain high. Crucially, less metal is recycled as a share of existing stocks today than a decade ago. This is even true for metals with well established secondary supply loops, including steel, copper and aluminium.
Impacts
Incentives for new recycling methods exist, as currently battery metals are retrieved via inefficient pyrometallurgical processes.
A lithium battery recycling plant exploded in Missouri, with the cause yet to be determined; safety concerns will remain high worldwide.
A new Ohio plant will mine nickel and cobalt from scrap and Canada is investing some USD6mn in critical minerals recycling tech in Ontario.
