Significance
The decision has alienated large swathes of society -- especially the young -- with many fearing for the future of the country’s relationship with the EU. The demonstrations and repressive government response echo the dynamics of Ukraine’s 2014 Maidan uprising, prompting concerns that the country could descend into chaos.
Impacts
Any increase in repression will widen the gap between the West and the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Moscow will be focused on preserving its military bases in Syria following the fall of the Assad government.
Azerbaijan could exploit the instability in the region to use military force against Armenia and seize contested territory.
