Significance
Haitians have long emigrated to the relatively prosperous Dominican Republic, where they account for a significant part of the labour force. At least 500,000 Haitians officially now live there, although the true number may be far higher as many are undocumented.
Impacts
Increased border security will boost demand for, and the costs of, cross-border smuggling.
Deportees may attempt to leave Haiti again by more dangerous routes, such as sea crossings to other Caribbean islands.
International criticism of deportations is growing and poses a reputational risk that could impact Dominican tourism.
