Significance
Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) -- the Afghan-based branch of Islamic State (IS) and an enemy of the ruling Taliban -- claimed responsibility. The ‘Haqqani network’, which Khalil Rahman Haqqani belonged to, is a key faction within the Taliban, which is increasingly riddled with infighting.
Impacts
Intensified Taliban operations against IS-K could encourage foreign countries to increase counterterrorism aid to Afghanistan.
The heightened pressure on IS-K will likely lead to increased infighting among its members.
Worsening violence will make attracting foreign investment even more challenging.
