Significance
It was Moscow’s principal response to Western sanctions imposed in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, has delivered a sustained increase in agricultural production. By 2024, Russia was the world’s third-largest agrifood exporter and the world’s leading supplier of wheat. Agrifood is behind only oil and gas by export value.
Impacts
The share of domestic food products in retail stores will continue to rise.
Counterfeit food will create serious problems in retail trade despite Russia’s strict labeling policies.
The lack of agreement on food safety and sanitation standards with EEU states will hamper trade growth.
