Significance
The newly acquired position provides it with new political and economic opportunities. Minsk has drawn closer to the loosely defined, broadly non-Western group, which appears to be gaining international importance. This will create new opportunities for it to improve its international trade prospects and leverage its position for political gains.
Impacts
Belarus's association with BRICS might encourage smaller countries to cooperate with the group.
Russia will deploy short- and intermediate-range nuclear missiles on Belarusian territory but retain full operational control of these.
Minsk may make cautious overtures to the West to balance its excessive dependence on Russia.
