Significance
States in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), are seeking to establish an important role in the mining and refining of critical minerals. With some exceptions, the main focus is on overseas mining and domestic processing.
Impacts
MENA investment can help diversify critical mineral supply chains and lower carbon footprints.
This will contribute to diversifying MENA economies and bring investment into more challenging minerals jurisdictions.
MENA countries will compete with each other, and seek partnerships with China and potentially the United States and other players.
