Significance
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include the ending of hunger and poverty (SDGs 1 and 2). Together with environmental protection, these are flagship issues for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, both domestically and in his efforts to play a leadership role globally.
Impacts
Brazil may struggle to advance its global leadership role in areas that have been key to Lula’s domestic agenda.
Successful policy implementation will require long-term structural initiatives rather than short-term emergency measures.
The attitude of the new US administration is likely to be key to prospects for the Alliance’s success.
