Significance
The new coalition is led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) and includes long-time foes of the party. Lacking a majority of its own, the coalition secured the outside support of the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (APS), a key player among Bulgarian Turks.
Impacts
North Macedonia may seek to engage Bulgaria to help unblock its EU accession.
Smaller coalition partners will need to distance themselves from GERB to avoid political extinction, risking government instability.
The government could struggle to make top-level appointments in the judiciary.
