Facilities management education in the Four Asian Dragons: a review Available to Purchase

Joseph Lai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Building Services Engineering, Faculty of Construction and Environment, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. With a first-class honors degree in building services engineering, a master’s degree in environmental management and a PhD in facilities management, Dr Lai is a registered professional engineer who had practiced for over a decade in building services consultancy, property development and facilities management before embarking on his academic career. Being the Facility Management Program Leader of PolyU, Dr Lai focuses his research on facilities engineering and management, and he has published widely in international journals. Serving as the Co-editor of the journal “Facilities” and a Regional Editor of the journal “Smart and Sustainable Built Environment”, Dr Lai is also on the committees of various professional institutions and public bodies. Over the years, Dr Lai has received a number of awards, including the IFMA Distinguished Educator Award 2018.

Kung-Jen Tu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). Recently, he was elected as the President of the Taiwan Institute of Property Management. He specializes in two major areas: “open building design” and “facility management”. In particular, he dedicated his effort in FM-related teaching and research tasks, as well as in serving and improving the FM industry in Taiwan. As for FM-related programs, he initiated a “Real Estate Management” graduate program in the Department of Architecture NTUST in 2016. He also helped develop a FM training program with TIPM to cultivate competent FM managers who are in great demand in the FM industry in Taiwan. Besides, he has been working as an FM consultant in several public housing and public library projects.

Jonathan K.M. Lian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. He teaches facilities management to undergraduate students on the BSc (Project and Facilities Management) Program at his alma mater. He is currently serving as the Deputy Head overseeing Academic matters at the Department of Building. Jonathan is an Accredited Airport Executive in the Association of American Airport Executives. He has over 12 years of airport experience and has worked globally at Airport facilities in North America and Asia.

Jun Ha Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Housing and Interior Design at Kyung Hee University, serving as the Director of PM and FM Track. He is a facility management professional (FMP) and a Korea-Certified Facility Manager (KCFM). He earned his bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Minnesota-twin cities and continued studies in the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, where he obtained an MS and a PhD specializing in integrated facility management. Prior to his current position, he worked for Georgia Tech’s facilities department and Turner Broadcasting System (CNN). He is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Korea Facility Management Association (KFMA) and a Vice President of the KFMA. His research interests include strategic facility planning and management, alternative workplaces, campus FM condition assessment and decision support systems for operation and maintenance.
