Symonds Group FM has launched a new service that will audit the total building system portfolio within a company's premises to identify those assets at risk from the millennium bug, including lighting, air-conditioning and other electrical systems.

In tackling what is referred to as the embedded chip problem, the audit will enable companies to implement a replacement/upgrade plan where necessary, to avoid system failures at the turn of the millennium.

The results from the completed audit enable Symonds to carry out a first stage risk assessment. Using a sophisticated database of manufacturers' information on Y2K compliant products, Symonds is able to make an almost immediate assessment to determine those electronic systems most at risk from crashing due to the inability to comprehend the date change from 31 December 1999 to 1 January 2000.

According to a recent article in the national press, one in eight companies is failing to tackle the year 2000 problem by not taking enough steps to ensure their systems that incorporate microprocessors are millennium compliant.

Alan Steen, special projects manager for Symonds Group FM, who is in charge of the new service, is confident that they can help companies to meet the deadline. "Symonds has already helped many companies to identify potential Y2K risk. The audit service will enable company owners and directors to determine the impact, and hence assess any genuine risk the change of date will have on their companies. Once they have this vital information they can take the necessary remedial or avoidance measures to mitigate the effects on their business."
