Mr. Henry A. Sharp says of the dictionary catalogue, “I found it in almost every American library that I visited in 1935”. (Cataloguing, 2nd ed., 1937, p. 29.) Why is it that our public librarians show little inclination to follow this excellent example from the United States? There are eight public library systems with which I have some familiarity (six urban and two county). Of these all except one use the classified catalogue, and I gather that this experience is typical.
