The growth in the number of working mothers in recent years has focussed attention on the woman at work. Extensive research has been carried out on aspects of sex discrimination and the general position of women in the labour market. One important issue which has generally been neglected, however, is the relationship between home and work, with most studies finding that working mothers have the continual problem of meeting both domestic and work‐role expectations. Even if the working woman with young children succeeds in arranging suitable child care during her working hours and has a work organization sympathetic to her situation, she will not be an effective manager nor obtain high job satisfaction unless she can also manage the demands of her home life effectively.
