Suggests ways of opening up communication, helping children feel more confident and raising their self‐esteem through the use of circles. Sees the use of circles in learning as a means of promoting greater self‐awareness and self‐esteem by breaking away from the more traditional hierarchical structures. Presents examples of how the idea of circles may be used: in seating arrangements with everybody at the same level; to facilitate discussions of any issue when all involved feel they can take part; when collecting children′s ideas –maintains that word circles give every child′s contribution equal value and status in contrast to a list which implies a hierarchical structure;to help children reflect on their own feelings. Suggests activities which help children explore their own feelings and those of others while advising on the idea of confidentiality. Concludes by supporting the idea of working with children at their eye level with a view to giving them greater help and understanding.
