Purpose

To improve the computational efficiency of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) simulations in porous media, this study aims to overcome the inherent thermal decoupling of fluid and solid phase in the segregated algorithms, which often leads to slow convergence and increased computational cost.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-way coupled acceleration method is developed within the segregated solution framework for convective heat transfer in porous media under LTNE conditions. By introducing a temperature-correction strategy, the method promotes synchronized evolution of the solid and fluid phase temperature fields while preserving the simplicity and flexibility of implementations. The proposed method is evaluated using three representative cases: temperature bifurcation in porous media, flow and heat transfer across tube banks and packed-bed heat transfer.

Findings

The proposed method significantly accelerates convergence over a wide range of underrelaxation factors, regardless of whether temperature influences the flow field, with a maximum speedup exceeding 50%. Its acceleration performance is positively correlated with the Biot number, while remaining largely insensitive to boundary conditions and source terms in the energy equations.

Originality/value

A correction-based acceleration strategy is developed for segregated simulations in LTNE porous media model. Rather than replacing the segregated framework with a fully coupled formulation, the proposed method reduces the phase-wise thermal lag through bidirectional temperature correction, providing a practical and low-intrusion route to improving convergence efficiency in existing finite-volume solvers.
