Purpose – Explains why Schneider Electric North America has chosen a shared-services arrangement rather than outsourcing human resource management services. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from senior human resource managers at Schneider Electric North America about the reasons for rejecting outsourcing and the benefits of its shared services center. Findings –Reports that the shared services center gives the firm more control over the human resource data and flexibility in its use, which strengthens the human resource management operations within the company. However, notes signs that US firms will continue to outsource rather than develop a shared services center, despite the success of firms like Schneider. Originality/value – Profiles a firm that has chosen not to outsource human resource services but to manage them in-house.ISSN: 1092-8332Reference: 36AG794
