Solutions focus and reorganization: restructuring at Freescale Semiconductor

McKergow M., Clarke J. Organizations & People (UK), August 2007, Vol. 14 No. 3, Start page: 2, No. of pages: 8

Purpose examines the change process implemented at Freescale Semiconductor. Design/methodology/approach describes how Freescale Semiconductor, designer and manufacturer of embedded semiconductors (chips), set about reorganizing its operations in order to maximize its resources. Outlines the complicated shift patterns operating at the factory; highlights how the change team was charged with clarifying and simplifying roles within this complex structure. Describes how the Organizational Optimization Team adopted the “Solutions Focus”process to deliver the business objectives; identifies its three basic principles don’t fix what isn’t broken, find what works and do more of it and if it doesn’t work, stop it and do something different. Reports on how a series of workshops applied “Solutions Focus” to bring about organizational change; provides comments from the authors on the steps taken; records how the structural changes were tested and implemented. Originality/value provides a case study example of how the Solutions Focus can be used to simplify the process of reorganizing a complex manufacturing operation.ISSN: 1350-6269Reference: 36BA070
