Professor Graham Jones is director of research and product development at Lane4 Management Group Ltd, a performance‐development consultancy founded and run by Adrian Moorhouse. Lane4 – which derives its name from the lane in which Moorhouse swam when winning his Olympic gold medal at Seoul, and is the lane allocated to the fastest qualifying time – employs elite sportsmen and women and leading performance psychologists, and coaches board‐level individuals and teams from blue‐chip organizations such as Coca‐Cola, Deutsche Bank, Roche, JP Morgan and Woolworth. High‐performing leaders are those who can effectively deal with the complexities of modern business. They can respond quickly to change, deal with ambiguity, provide direction, manage around constraints, and leverage the commitment and intellectual capital of the people around them. When this capability is cultivated across an organization, it creates a distinct performance environment that enables the organization to adapt, innovate, and ultimately win and sustain competitive advantage.
