Purpose

Discusses a tailor‐made programme designed to enhance change‐management skills at general insurer Allianz Cornhill.

Design/methodology/approach

Gives details of the programme, created by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Highlights the key areas of managing change and influencing culture, project management, personal effectiveness and leadership. Also details research into management learning and development by the CMI and sponsored by the Department for Trade and Industry, Investors in People UK, the British Quality Foundation and the Learning and Skills Council

Findings

Reveals that management and leadership development work best when they are linked to business strategy and have senior‐level endorsement.

Practical implications

Shows that the most successful businesses take management development seriously, creating a culture of continuous learning and development.
