Purpose

Analyses the effects on human‐resource management of the privatization of the Czech Republic's former state‐owned telecommunication monopoly, Cesky Telecom.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of an article based on a research that used a qualitative approach that supported an in‐depth case‐study analysis.

Findings

Finds that management strategies at Cesky Telecom exhibited some similarities with those of western telecommunication companies facing similar deregulation issues, but these processes were tempered by country‐specific historical and institutional factors.

Practical implications

Constitutes a useful source of information for human‐resource management (HRM) specialists who wish to manage workers in the Czech Republic.

Originality/value

Provides a case study in an important strategic sector that has undergone large‐scale change.
