Purpose – Explains how Qualcomm, a US technology firm, has developed its own human resource software instead of buying off-the-shelf products. Design/methodology/approach – Sets out why the decision to develop a tailor-made system was made. Describes how the software was developed and indicates the advantages gained. Quotes from Nancy Hemry, director of human resource management systems at Qualcomm, about the decision and the advantages of the web-based systems. Also briefly describes how Cendant, a travel and real estate service conglomerate, has customized off-the-shelf human resource software products to make them more suited for their uses. An inset gives an alternative view, describing why NES Rentals decided against developing its own human resource software system and, instead, rents HR software over the web. Findings – Points out that Qualcomm are unusual in deciding to develop their own human resource software and that organizations have encountered significant problems from home-grown systems.
