Reports on the growing trend towards globally dispersed teams operating within companies and the evolution of techniques for efficient, successful and seamless team management. Discusses the problems associated with the management of teams that are distributed widely across several continents and offers advice on the development of virtual team working. Considers such factors as cultural issues, and time zone differences. Suggests four key ingredients in any scheme of successful virtual team management, comprising: designing a structured training program for new team members, possibly with a mentoring program;creating a clear personal development plan for each team member; ensuring that knowledge is shared throughout the team (something that occurs naturally in an office environment); and holding regular team meetings or away-days, involving every team member, in order to maintain the team’s integrity and identity. Concludes that there is considerable scope for innovations such as social media and networks for facilitating team management. ISSN: 1471-9185 Reference:39AN533
