Explains how mentoring has developed, arguing that there have been five significant shifts in its practice. Lists these shifts as being: the acceptance that mentoring can happen in individual, group and situational interactions; the broadening of the terms “mentee” and “mentor” to become“learner” and “advisor”: the idea that career advancement is not the only purpose of mentoring; the understanding that mentoring can be used across the hierarchy of the organization with peer-to-peer mentoring but also subordinate-to-manager mentoring; and the awareness that mentoring need not be time-consuming or occur only in face-to-face situations. Discusses these developments and their implications for mentoring programs. ISSN: 1535-7740 Reference: 40AG372
